THE SCRIPTURE:
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech…. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city… (Gen 11:1-9)
THE STUDY:
From our text:
“And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.”
Before the tower of Babel all of mankind shared in the same language and speech. In other words, they spoke the same language and the same dialect. Because of this, it was much easier for them to unify and work toward the same goals.
“And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
They, by consensus, they decided to travel together as one nation and to build a tower that would serve as a centralized meeting place for all mankind. Note the phrase “whose top may reach unto heaven”, this is not stating that they desired to enter into the 3rd heaven (the abode of God), instead they desired it to be a very high tower that stood out from all others. It could be seen from a long distance away, thus allowing them to become a conspicuous people (“name”) among all of God’s creation and stay united (”lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth”)
Here, we can see mankind choosing to form a “New World Order” by uniting and working to gain recognition, strength and perpetual unity. These were selfish motives which went in direct opposition to glorifying and honoring the Lord. Instead of glorifying God they desired to bring honor, praise and renown to themselves.
“And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”
The Triune Lord responded by “confounding their language”, which resulted in them dividing and scattering. Probably, after they began speaking in various languages… they formed various groups, made up of those who spoke the same language.
The New World Order that mankind attempted to create was brought to an end by the Lord. We can see that the Lord, through His sovereign intervention, stopped the attempt to unify and glorify mankind instead of Himself.
Throughout history, this has been the story of the attempts to unify into a NWO. Mankind has wanted to unify, under the guise of improving the condition of mankind… and yet, in every case, this unification would result in individuals being glorified, empowered and made wealthy as the end result of this unification.
THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Once again, we see that man’s plans, which do not take into consideration the will of the Lord, is destined for failure. (James 4:14-15, Pro 19:21, Lam 3:37, Hebs 6:3) No matter how determined mankind might be, it is futile to rebel against the Lord. (Psa 16:18-19, Pro 29:23, Acts 12:21-23) Eventually, man’s rebellion will be brought into submission to the Lord. (Roms 14:11-12, Phil 2:9-11, Isa 2:11-12)
For those who have trusted in Christ, pride and going ahead of God’s will only leads to a life of heartache and sorrow. We should be constantly aware of His will for our lives and our need to submit to it.
For those who have never trusted in Christ, the most valuable lesson that can be learned is that rebellion against the desires of God for our lives only works sorrow, and eventually, eternal separation from the Lord. By submitting to the Lord, and humbly turning to Him, He promises to forgive us of our rebellion and secure our eternity with Him...
But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. (Neh 9:16-17)
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (Joh 17:2-3)
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Mat 11:28-30)
