Gen 5:19-24 (KJV) And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he [was] not; for God took him.
Within the pages of the Bible, we read very little about this man named “Enoch” and, yet, what we are told about him should cause any Christian to appreciate the wonderful testimony that he left behind. Besides his age, lineage and descendants, we are told basically four different things about Enoch:
1. “Enoch walked with God”
2. “God took him (Enoch)”; in other words, “Enoch was translated that he should not see death and was not found for God took him”
3. “he (Enoch) had this testimony, that he pleased God”
4.”Enoch… prophesied of these saying, Behold the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints”
In devotion for this morning, I would like us to look at the first aspect of Enoch’s testimony…. “Enoch walked with God”. The word translated “walked with” carries with it the idea of “to consistently walk alongside”, “ to habitually accompany” or “to march alongside”. When we are told that “Enoch walked with God”, we are told that Enoch enjoyed an unfailing intimate relationship with his Lord.
Throughout the pages of Scripture we are told that there is a positive and a negative aspect to possessing an intimate relationship with God:
1. The positive aspect… There must be the presence of agreement between the two parties for genuine intimacy to exist:
Amos 3:3 (KJV) Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
2. The negative aspect… There must be an absence of indwelling sin from our lives for we are clearly told that sin separates us from our God:
Isa 59:2 (KJV) But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will not hear.
This is the type of relationship with the Lord that Enoch had come to enjoy throughout his lifetime…. It was a relationship centered on agreement with the Lord; His teachings about Himself and His work; and His will for Enoch’s life. This agreement with the Lord was coupled with an absence of habitual, indwelling sin. Enoch agreed with the Lord about the identity of sin, the presence of sin in his life and the proper way to deal with that sin. Because of this, Enoch came to a saving knowledge of his Lord (through faith) and then consistently deal with the sin that he committed throughout his lifetime.
Would we like to be remembered by others as one who “walked with God”? If so, we must be submissive to the teachings of God, bringing ourselves into agreement with Him. And then, we must be sure that we have and will continue to, Scripturally, deal with the sin that enters into our lives. May the Lord grant us the grace to do these and grant us the blessing of a close daily walk with Him.
May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.
