“SIH’s Think On These Things: Hebs 12:1-2”

Hebrews 12:1-2…  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

As we begin 2013, let’s take a few moments to review the advice given to us by the writer of Hebrews found in Hebs 12:1-2.  This Scripture tells us about four key spiritual principles to retain the absolute commitment in the service of Christ….

We can remain totally committed to Christ by ….

#1 – Following Godly examples of committed saints…

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses,”

Who is this “cloud of witnesses?”  It is the many different men and women spoken of in Hebs 11:, that remained committed to their Lord as they faced many different obstacles to their service.

As we begin this New Years Day let us remember these saints of the Bible, as well as, the other Godly saints living in our day who are setting the example for us of faithfulness and willingness to sacrifice for Christ and His work.

#2 – Putting off those things that are hindrances to our service…

“let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us,”

In this passage, we are told to put off two different hindrances to service: “every weight” and “sin”.  A “weight” involves the cares, tribulations and hardships that this world has to offer. On the other hand “sin” is referring to those times when we fall short of His desires and commands for our lives.

As we prepare for this New Year, let us exercise faith, laying our “weights” upon Christ; be vigilant avoiding sin; and through repentance dealing with the sin that slips into our life; we can be better prepared for faithful service in 2013.

#3 Exercising patience in all areas of our ministry…

and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Great patience is needed in our walk with Christ.  In our prayer life, in the reaping a harvest from the seeds of faith we have sown, in waiting for the coming of our Lord, in every aspect of our service we have a great need for patience as we face seeming delay after delay after delay.

As we begin our New Year of service we should be prepared for times calling for our patience, remembering these times come upon us for our good, to help us grow and mature in the faith.

#4 Keeping our eyes upon our Lord…

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Keeping our eyes on the Lord involves keeping in mind who He is.(“the author and finisher of our faith”) our Savior.  It also involves remembering what He has done to secure that salvation for us. (“endured the cross”, “despised the shame”)  Finally, it involves us recognizing Him as Exalted Sovereign Lord who controls all things (“sat down at right hand of the throne of God”)

Our New Year should begin, continue and end with our eyes upon our precious Savior as the chief motivation for our service to Him.  By thinking of who He is and what He has done for us, we will by His grace remain faithful servants of the One who has given His all for us.

May we all take a moment to reread Hebs 12:1-2 and ask the Lord to grant us the grace we need to be rededicated to serving Him as we begin another year  of obedience to Christ.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”

“SIH’s Think On These Things: 2 Cor 5:17 (3)”

Our New Beginning In Christ

2Cor 5:17 (KJV)  Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

As New Year’s Day approaches, we all have a tendency to reflect upon the events that have taken place in the previous year and look forward to what the coming year may hold for us. Although this earthly experience of a new beginning is profitable, there is an even greater time of new beginnings that is offered to us in the pages of the Bible.  I would like us to look at this wonderful time of “new beginnings” that is graciously offered to us through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. We find teaching summarized in 2 Cor 5:17.

In our previous devotions, we have seen that it is only through the “new birth”, or becoming a “new creature” in Christ, that we can receive this new beginning in Christ.  We also have seen that becoming a new creature involves leaving behind our past life of rebellion and failure to achieve God’s desires  for our life. For this devotion, we will be looking at what some of the blessings we receive when things are made new…

“... all things are become new”

When we are made new creatures there are wonderful aspects to the new birth that we experience.  Here are just a few:

1.  a new life – The Bible pictures man’s natural state as being “dead in trespasses and sins”.  By this we mean that mankind, due to their acts of rebellion against the Lord, are spiritually separated from God and unable to bring themselves into a relationship with Him.  But through the work of Jesus, those who are dead are brought into a relationship with Him (John 6:32-40, Col 2:13-15)

2.  a new freedom – All men have entered into a state of spiritual bondage, unable to escape the effects and control of sin in their lives.  Christ, through His death on the cross paid the needed ransom to deliver us from sin’s bondage and give us freedom in Him. (1 Tim 2:3-6, Rom 6:17-18)

3.  a new relationship with our Creator – After the new birth, we can enjoy unhindered fellowship with God, being made an adopted member of His family and citizen of His spiritual nation. (Eph 2:13-15, 18-19, Gal 6:15-18)

4.  a new ability to understand His Word – Along with the new birth, we are given eyes that are opened to the truth.  We are also given the Holy Spirit to indwell us and give us an understanding of the teachings of God found in the Bible. (Isa 42:6-9, Acts 26:18, Eph 1:16-18, John 15:26-27)

5.  a new set of fruits – At the new birth, we are given a new nature within us, giving us the ability to bear fruits that are pleasing to God through the Holy Spirit’s intervention.  (Gal 5:19-23, Eph 4:22-24)

6.  a new eternity – Once we have been brought into communion with the Lord, we are promised many wonderful blessings as we enter into eternity in the presence of God. (Rev 21:-22:, John 14:1-3, 2 Cor 5:1,  Heb 11:10-16 etc)

As we quickly approach the New Years, let us all keep in our minds the new beginning that our Lord has graciously given to us.  By His grace, motivated by His love for us, He has made us into “new creatures” allowing us to put behind all of our “old things” and being able to experience a newness of life in Him.  Let’s praise and honor the One who has given us such a wonderful set of blessings to us.

Finally, please remember that our praise to Him should not be limited to our speech, but should encompass our actions as well.  This means during our New Year’s celebration we should keep our minds on our Lord and His workings, and celebrate the New Year in a way that is God honoring, setting the example for all those around us.

“SIH’s Think On These Things: 2 Cor 5:17 (2)”

Our New Beginning In Christ

2Cor 5:17 (KJV)  Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

As New Year’s Day approaches, we all have a tendency to reflect upon the events that have taken place in the previous year and look forward to what the coming year may hold for us. Although this earthly experience of a new beginning is profitable, there is an even greater time of new beginnings that is offered to us in the pages of the Bible.  I would like us to look at this wonderful time of new beginnings that is graciously offered to us through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. We find teaching summarized in 2 Cor 5:17.

In our previous devotion, we have seen that it is only through the “new birth”, or becoming a “new creature” in Christ, that we can receive this new beginning in Christ.  For this devotion, we will be looking at what old things are passed away when we trust in Jesus Christ for our salvation…

“old things are passed away…”

To “be passed away” carries with it three different shades of meaning…

1. to be averted or turned aside

2. to perish, to go out of existence

3. to be ignored, to be passed over

In summary, these old things are “turned away” from us, no longer being held accountable for them; in other words, it is as if they are “ignored” by God; or in that sense, they have “gone out of existence”.   Although this phrase has these varied meanings, the basic principle can clearly be seen.  When we become new creatures in Christ, the “old things” no longer have eternal effects in our lives.

Keeping this in mind, we can see that when we become new creatures in Christ, it truly becomes a new beginning for us.  All the “old things” are no longer eternally applicable to us; it is as if we begin our life anew.  But, obviously, the next question is this… what are some of the “old things” of which this verse speaks?  What are the things that no longer have eternal results in our lives?

First, let me say that it is next to impossible to give a complete listing of all the old things that pass away at our salvation.  Because we truly become “new creatures” in Him, the many changes we experience are more than can be numbered.  However, we can look some of the most obvious of our “old things”…

1. Our sinful acts – Once we are saved, our sins are no longer on our account, they have been taken by Christ and replaced with His righteousness. (2 Cor 5:21)

2. Our sinful lifestyle/habits – Once we are saved, our manner of living changes, no longer are we the servants of sin, nor are we living a life of consistent sin.  Although not sinless, our new life is now characterized by righteousness and holiness. (Eph 4:21-24)

3. Our sinful desires/motives – Once we are saved, our desires are now pointed toward pleasing our Saviour and fulfilling the will of our Lord. (Heb 13:20-21, Col 3:1-4)

4. Our sinful viewpoints – Once we are saved, we look at our lives and the world around us differently.  Before, we looked at these things through the lens of selfishness and spiritual blindness.   Now, we view everything through the prism of God’s Word and His revealed will for us. (Eph 5:8-14)

5. Our sinful  condition - Once we are saved, we are no longer facing the judgment for our sins, nor do we experience alienation/separation from our God. (Eph 2:11-13, Col 1:21-22)

What a blessing and joy it is to know that the “old things” of our lives are passed away and, through His gracious work on our behalf, all thing s have been made new.

“SIH’s Think On These Things: 2 Cor 5:17 (1)”

Our New Beginning In Christ

2Cor 5:17 (KJV)  Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

As New Year’s Day approaches, we all have a tendency to reflect upon the events that have taken place in the previous year.  At the same time, we find ourselves turning our attention to the many worldly opportunities that the coming year may hold for us. It is during this time of celebration that we attempt to place our past behind us and receive a wonderful eternity filled with great hope and blessings

Although this earthly experience of a new beginning is profitable, there is an even greater time of new beginnings that is offered to us in the pages of the Bible.  This is not a temporal “new beginning” that must be experienced on a yearly basis, but it is a one-time spiritual type of new beginning that permanently places our past behind us and opens us a future that is filled with unending hope, peace, security and victory.

I would like us to look at this wonderful time of “new beginnings” that is graciously offered to us through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. We find this teaching summarized in 2 Cor 5:17…

Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature:…”

In our text, we can see that this new beginning is described as becoming “a new creature”.  This helps us to understand that this new beginning is so complete it is as if we have been remade, or “born again”.

This new birth is not a physical rebirth, but it is a spiritual rebirth brought about through the intervention of God through the Holy Spirit’s application of the Word of God (John 3:3-7, 1 Pet 1:21-23).   The path to this new birth is good news that finds its origin in heaven (1 Cor 15:1-9).  This good news is the central theme of the entire Bible, which clearly explains that:

1. The Lord Jesus Christ came to the earth and, motivated by love for His people, willingly died on the cross.  As He died, Jesus was the sinless substitute, bearing the sin and the judgment that was meant for His people. (Rom 5:6-8, Gal 1:3-5, 1 Pet 2:21-24, 1 Pet 3:18)

2.  The Lord’s body was then buried in the tomb for three days and three nights while His spirit wen to heaven (paradise) to be with the Father.  (Matt 12:40, Matt 27:57-66, Luke 23:43)

3.  Following the three day and three night time period, Jesus’s spirit re-entered His body. He came out of the grave and displayed to all that He was victor over sin and death. (Luke 24:1-8, Rom 1:4, Rom 6:9, Eph 2:6)

4.  Multiple witnesses saw the resurrected Christ, giving us undisputable proof that this resurrection took place (1 Cor 15:5-9, John 20:19-26 etc etc).  All of this gives us assurance that the Biblical account of Christ and His work on our behalf can be trusted and unquestioningly applied to our lives.

As we close today’s devotional, let me speak particularly to those who have never received this new birth and the new beginning that it entails... the need in your life is self-evident.

The Lord of all the heaven and earth has been very good and gracious to us all.  The rain that falls upon our heads; the food we have to eat; our physical existence and the life that we enjoy; our families; our friends; and our health are all undeserved gifts that He gives to each one of us.  Because of this He deserves our honor, praise and obedience.

Sadly, all of us have failed to give Him what He deserves.  He gave us instructions to live by, instructions which would allow us to live lives of prosperity and enjoyment.  All of us failed to follow those instructions… we have all sinned against Him.   We have withheld from Him what He deserves… our complete and total dedication to Him.  We have placed ourselves in a horrible position of rebellion against the very One who has loved and cared for us unconditionally.

So,  what can be done?  How can we be delivered from this horrible condition into which we have placed ourselves?

1.  The Bible tells us we must understand our great need of Him and the great failures that we have committed.  In other words, we must change how we look at ourselves and Jesus.  We must see ourselves as He sees us, rebellious, indebted creatures who are unable to obtain salvation through our own merit.

We must see Him as He is, our Saviour and the Master of our lives. This can only be accomplished by believing what the Bible says about His person and the work that He performed on our behalf.

2.  And then, by turning away from the many failures of our attitudes and actions, we come to Christ in an attitude of trust and submission. It is only then that we can find rest for our souls.

This is the call of the gospel message. This is the revealed will of God for your life. This is the great path that leads to salvation, forgiveness and a new beginning in Christ.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.

“SIH’s Think On These Things: Luke 2:10-11(2)”

Luke 2:10-11 (KJV)

10) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

The news given to the shepherds by the angels of God, was news that would change the course of all mankind.  This news was a declaration of the long awaited Messiah’s entrance into the world resulting in His work which accomplished the redemption of sinners and His reign in the hearts of men.

In our continuing look at Jesus’ first coming to the earth, let’s take this morning to complete our look at this wonderful announcement of the birth that forever changed the world….

For unto you is born this day in the city of David

The angel’s message was of a personal nature to the shepherds.  The angel did not say “Born this day ….”, but said “For UNTO YOU is born this day…”. The Messiah’s coming was done on a personal level for each and every one of us.  His sacrifice was not performed as a general act of benevolence for “mankind”.  Not at all.  He came specifically to save HIS PEOPLE from their sins…. Matt 1:21 - And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

The angel goes further by telling of the location of His birthplace, the city of David, Bethlehem (“the house of bread”) Luke 2:4.  What better town for the “bread of life” in which to be born! (John 6:35,48)

The angel, then, describes the Messiah (or the Christ), giving Him titles that explain both the mission and results of His first coming (salvation of sinners and rulership of world)…

a Saviour,

The promised Messiah, Jesus, would save His people from their sins and the effects of their sins (in time - spiritual death, spiritual enslavement, God’s punishment for sin….. in eternity – deliverance from sickness, sorrow, and the presence of sin… the list of blessings of salvation is endless!)

which is Christ the Lord.

The promised Christ is also described here as “Lord” or “Ruler”.  At His first coming He secured His rulership over all by obtaining victory over Satan, sin and death (Heb 2:14, Roms 8:1-4).  Based upon His faithfulness to the Father, He has received the sovereign authority to rule over all the world (Eph 1:21-22). He obtains the willful submission of His people as He rules in their hearts (Luke 17:20-21) while He Sovereignly controls those who do not recognize, nor seek to submit to, His commands (Col 2:8-15).   He truly is Lord over all.

It is the first coming of the Messiah that we will be celebrating in the days ahead.  As we enjoy our Christmas exchanging gifts with our family, friends and acquaintances, let’s remember that this is the world’s day to commemorate the greatest gift that was ever given. It was the Messiah, the very Son of God, given by God the Father, for the salvation and rulership over all the world.  Let’s keep Jesus in the forefront of our minds as we celebrate His birth on Christmas Day.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.

“SIH’s Think On These Things: Luke 2:10-11(1)”

Luke 2:10-11 (KJV)

10) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

The news given to the shepherds by the angels of God, was news that would change the course of all mankind.  This news was a declaration of the long awaited Messiah’s entrance into the world resulting in His work which accomplished the redemption of sinners and His reign in the hearts of men.

In our continuing look at Jesus’ first coming to the earth, let’s take two mornings to look at this wonderful announcement of the birth that forever changed the world.

For this morning I would like us to look at the first verse of this grand announcement…

And the angel said unto them, Fear not:

If we put ourselves in the place of these shepherds, it is no wonder that the first words out the mouth of this angel was “fear not”.  What a wonderful, yet fearful event it would be to see an angel appearing out of nowhere to deliver a message to you and your friends.  But then, you would hear the comforting words…. “fear not”!

for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

Why should they not be fearful?  It was because the angels had not come to harm them.  They had come to deliver news that would hold great benefits and an overflowing joy to the shepherds and the entire world.

In the next verse, we are told that their message was a declaration of the birth of the Messiah.

No wonder they described their message as being one of “great joy”. It would be through the Messiah’s coming, His teachings and His works that men would find eternal life, forgiveness of sins, and peace with God.  Of course, these results of the Messiah’s ministry would bring great joy to the hearts of those who would place their trust in Him.

It is this first coming of the Messiah that we will be celebrating in the days ahead.  As we enjoy our Christmas exchanging gifts with our family, friends and acquaintances, let’s remember that this is the world’s day to commemorate the greatest gift that was ever given. It was the Messiah, the very Son of God, given by God the Father, for the salvation and rulership of all the world.  Let’s keep Jesus in the forefront of our minds as we celebrate His birth on Christmas Day.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.

“The OT Promise Of Christ (12)”

Him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write

In our series we have seen clearly that Jesus (in His life, death and future coming to the earth) has (and will) completely, and exclusively, fulfilled the Old Testament promises of the coming Messiah.  But what does this mean for each and every one of us?  Of what relevance does this truth hold for us?  Let’s take a few moments to consider the importance of the knowledge we have gained throughout this study…

THE SCRIPTURES:

John 1:45

45) Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

John 5:39-47

39) Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40) And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41) I receive not honour from men.

42) But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43) I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44) How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that [cometh] from God only?

45) Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is [one] that accuseth you, [even] Moses, in whom ye trust.

46) For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

47) But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THIS ENTIRE STUDY:

After looking at many of the various Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament, we can come to a much fuller understanding of Philip’s statement that is made in John 1:45…

Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

What a wonderful declaration on the part of Philip, unmistakably revealing to His brother that Jesus was the true promised Messiah.

The importance of that knowledge is described in John 5:39-47, which contains the teachings of our Lord concerning His true identity.…

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Jesus tells us of the importance of seeking to find out His true identity, which is the key to the receipt of eternal life. He specifically points to the “Scriptures” (Old Testament text) as the source of truth for us to come to an appropriate understanding of His person and work. (Acts 8:32-35)

And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life, I receive not honour from men.  But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

In this discourse, Jesus is speaking to those who have never come to a saving knowledge of Him.  (John 5:343, John 6:37-40, John 11:25-26)

He characterizes them as:

1.  not coming to Him

2.  not possessing (spiritual) life

3.  not honoring Him.

4. not having love of God

All of which are clear indications that they were in a sinful, unforgiven, and spiritually dead condition (John 3:19, John 12:37-41, Matt 23:37).  He knew the true condition of their hearts.  Although they may not recognize their own spiritual condition, He did.

I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

Because of their spiritual condition, they were bent towards rejecting the true Messiah and easily misled to follow a false prophet.  This is the condition of all lost mankind. It is only through the revelation of the Bible, in concert with the intervention of the Holy Spirit, that their spiritually blindness can be overcome (John 8:28-29, John 17:4-6, Heb 5:4-5, Matt 24:5,24) .

How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that [cometh] from God only?

A mark of those who are false prophets from God is a desire to receive man’s honor and praise without desiring to glorify and please God in their lives. These perverted desires come from the reign of their sinful flesh over their thoughts and intents of their heart. (Matt 23:5, Phil 2:3, 1 Cor 4:5)

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is [one] that accuseth you, [even] Moses, in whom ye trust.

Christ will not have to accuse the lost before the Father, the word of God will be testimony enough to condemn them to eternal punishment.  They are held directly responsible for receiving His word and then following it.  If they do not take heed to the revelation about Jesus they will be held accountable by God the Father.  (Rom 3:19-20, Rom 7:9-14)

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.  But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

If someone believes the OT scripture then, based upon it’s revelation about Christ, they must believe Christ and His Words as well.  Why is this?  Because the OT undoubtedly reveals Christ as the Messiah sent from God with His message to do His works.  The Messiah of the OT is the God sent Prophet, Priest and King coming to save his people from their sins. (Gal 3:10, Gal 3:24, Luke 16:27-31)

For what purpose was this study? It was to, unquestioningly, reveal Jesus as the fulfillment of the OT promises of the Messiah and show each one of us our need of salvation.  That salvation is given through the grace of God as He intervenes in our life, gracing us with the ability to turn form our sins and place our faith in Him as our Lord and Savior.

May the Lord bless our study of His Word.
