An
Eternal King Descended From David
One aspect of the many promises of the Messiah that
is found in the Old Testament is the lineage through which the Messiah would
come. For this morning’s devotion let’s
look at the promise of the Messiah, the eternal King of Israel coming through
the line of David.
THE
SCRIPTURES:
Jer
23:5-6
5) Behold, the days
come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a
King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the
earth.
6)
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this [is] his name whereby he shall be called,
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Ps
89:35-37
35) Once have I sworn by
my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
36)
His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.
37)
It shall be established for ever as the moon, and [as] a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
Matt
1:1
1) The book of the
generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Matt
1:6
6) And Jesse begat
David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her [that had been the wife] of Urias;
Matt
22:41-46
41) While the Pharisees
were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42)
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, [The Son] of David.
43)
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
44)
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine
enemies thy footstool?
45)
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
46)
And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any [man] from that day forth ask him any
more [questions].
Luke
1:30-32
30) And the angel said
unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31)
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt
call his name JESUS.
32)
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God
shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
Rev
22:16
16) I Jesus have sent
mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and
the offspring of David, [and] the
bright and morning star.
THE
STUDY:
In our previous devotional, we saw that the Messiah
was promised to come to the earth through the line that included Jesse, the
father of 8 sons (one of which was David).
Not only was the Messiah said to come from the line of Jesse, but He was
said to descend from the line of Jesse’s son, David, King of Israel. It would be through the Messiah that the
throne of David would be established forever.
This was a direct result of a promise that God had given to David
insuring the eternal nature of the reign of David over Israel.
THE
PROPHECY:
Jer
23:5-6
In this promise of the coming Messiah, we can
see that it would be through David that the Messiah would come. But this promise also plainly declares that
He would reign perfectly over Israel working worldwide justice and judgment… “I will raise unto David a righteous Branch,
and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in
the earth….
he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Please notice that, just as in the Jesse prophecies, we see that the
Messiah is pictured as a Branch coming forth from David, emphasizing His
descendancy from David and a part of the Kingly line of Israel.
Ps
89:35-37
In Psa 89:35-37, we read
that the Lord made a promise to David that His family line and His kingdom
would never come to an end. “Once
have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall
endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It
shall be established for ever as the moon, and [as] a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.”
Notice the Lord uses His
holiness and truthfulness is guarantee of the fulfillment of this
prophecy. In other words, the
fulfillment of this Messianic prophecy, and by implication the fulfillment of
ALL Messianic prophecies, is an issue of the Lord’s faithfulness, honesty and
sovereignty. For someone to say that
His prophecies will not be perfectly fulfilled is equivalent to saying that,
either, the Lord is unreliable, He lied, or else He cannot control the events
that take place on the earth.
THE
FULFILLMENT:
Matt
1:1
The Bible clearly
declares that Jesus is the descendent of King David in Matt 1:1 “…Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of
Abraham.”
Matt
1:6 & Luke 3:32
In both the physical
(Matt) and legal (Luke) genealogies of the Lord we find David is mentioned…
6) And Jesse begat
David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her [that had been the wife] of Urias;
31) Which was [the son] of Melea, which was [the son] of Menan, which was [the son] of Mattatha, which was [the son] of Nathan, which was [the son] of David,
Luke
1:30-32
In the angel’s message to
Mary, it is mentioned that Jesus would receive the throne of David as a part of
His exalted position of authority. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary:
… and the Lord God
shall give unto him the throne of his father David: Also, please notice that David is described as
“his father”, referring to Jesus being a physical and legal descendant of King
David.
Rev
22:16
Jesus, Himself testified
that He is the descendant of David in Rev 22:16… “Jesus… I am the root and the offspring of David…” Not
only is this an issue of the truthfulness and reliability of God the Father,
but now we see the truthfulness of God the Son as well.
Matt
22:41-46
Christ’s place in the
line of David became an issue with some of the religious leaders of Christ’s
day. Keep in mind that, in those days,
individuals would give great respect and honor to their ancestors. Normally,
their ancestor was considered their “lord” (master, holder of authority).
The Pharisees could not
understand why David, the ancestor of Jesus would address Jesus as His “Lord”
in Psa 110:1… “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my
right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?” In their mind, this was proof that Jesus could not be the promised
Messiah… “If David then call
him Lord, how is he his son?”
What the Pharisees did
not understand was that Jesus was not simply a human, but He was God as
well. Because He was God, He deserved
the title of “Lord” given to Him by David.
Jesus was the “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” deserving honor, respect
and submission from all mankind, even those who were His physical ancestors.
PRACTICAL
APPLICATION:
Jesus, being a physical descendant of
David, is once again shown to fully fulfill another Messianic requirement given
to us in the Old Testament. Beyond this,
when we see that Jesus eternally possesses the throne of David as King of Kings
and Lord of Lords, Jesus identity as the true Messiah becomes more clearly
displayed.
May the Lord bless our study of His
Word.
