“SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 15:31-33”

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Anatomy Of The Wise: The Ear: Proverbs 15:31-33
31) The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
32) He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.
33) The fear of the LORD [is] the instruction of wisdom; and before honour [is] humility.

EXPOSITION:
The ability to hear and understand the Word of God is a gracious gift of God that is given to those who are wise…

31) The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
1.  The wise are individuals that understand, and give close attention to the practical, corrective teachings of God’s Word.

The ears of the wise are opened to God’s corrective teachings

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.   (James 1:22-25)

32) He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.
1.  The person that opposes the instructive warnings of God is showing enmity for himself by rejecting that which would be of benefit to himself.
2.  The person who places his attention on the correction of the Lord will gain a knowledge of his condition before God.

The ears of the wise will listen to the Lord as He reveals to him the condition of his heart.

O LORD, [are] not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, [but] they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.  Therefore I said, Surely these [are] poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, [nor] the judgment of their God.   (Jeremiah 5:3-4)

33) The fear of the LORD [is] the instruction of wisdom; and before honour [is] humility.
1.  The need for honor and respect of the Lord is a main theme of wise teachings.
2.  The wise understands the need for personal humility to gain the respect and attention of others.

The ears of the wise will understand the need to honor the Lord by humility

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that [is] wisdom; and to depart from evil [is] understanding.   (Job 28:28)

SUMMARY:

To what a man gives his attention and understanding will reveal the level of his wisdom:
1.  The ears of the wise are opened to God’s corrective teachings
2.  The ears of the wise will listen to the Lord as He reveals to him the condition of his heart.
3.  The ears of the wise will understand the need to honor the Lord by humility

By God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value that they deserve.

May the Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
