SIH’s Think On These Things: Isaiah 6:1b

We now continue our devotional series on the two-fold calling (to salvation and to service) of Isaiah.  Remember in this series we will be looking to learn more about the One who is calling Isaiah, along with the nature of the calls and an examination of the submission to these calls by Isaiah… 



Isaiah 6:1b - In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord… high and lifted up, …



In our previous lesson we saw that the Lord’s authority over all was revealed and emphasized to us  in this vision by Jehovah being given the title “Lord” (Adonai) and also by Him being seen sitting on a throne.  



In our devotion today, we see a related, but different, truth.  Here, we find the Lord described as being ”high and lifted up”.  What is meant by this phrase? 

1.     “High” – If we study this word in the Hebrew language we find that it is describing the Lord’s superiority over all things.  It is a word that describes the Lord’s POSITION over all that exists.  A part of this term explains He holds a position of authority over all (just as we saw yesterday).  But this word goes much further.  It is saying that in EVERY WAY He is supreme.  His wisdom, His strength, His love, His grace, His kindness, His existence, His justice, as well as His authority… any attribute He possesses excels over any attribute that any creature that exists may possess.  He is the Supreme One in every way.  This is the meaning of “High”.

2.     “Lifted Up” – This term is describes the RESULT of His supremacy over all. Because He is supreme we are obligated to to exalt Him ( to hold Him up) in the eyes of others.  We have the responsibility to tell others of His supremacy through our actions and words.  He is to be glorified and honored by all of us.  He is to be lifted up by His creation… He is to be honored, glorified and exalted for being who He is. This is the idea behind the term “lifted up”.



Many times we have a tendency to exalt Him for WHAT HE DOES FOR US.  Out of a heart of love and appreciation we desire to lift Him up to those around us.  There is nothing wrong with this.  However, our desire to exalt Him should not end with this.  It should also be motivated in another way…

 

We should desire to exalt Him for WHO HE IS.  We should “put Him on high” simply because He is far greater than anyone of us.  Do we ever take the time to stop and think about Who He is?    Do we ever praise Him for being eternal?  Do we ever stop and tell someone about Him simply because He is All-knowing?  Do we exalt Him in our actions because we know that He is just and righteous in all He does?



He must be “lifted up” because He is “high”!
