“We through
patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
SIH’s Think On
These Things: Romans 15:4
Rom
15:4 (KJV) For
whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we
through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Another very important
gift of grace that we should be ever appreciative of is the Word of the Lord that
He has handed down to us…
“For whatsoever
things were written aforetime were written for our learning”
The Word of God was
handed down from God to man, specifically to teach God’s people. The giving of His Word is an act of God’s
grace motivated by His great love and care for His people.
In 2 Tim 3:16-17, we
read that the Lord’s Word was intended to benefit the saints. It does this by
revealing truth; warning of error; showing how to correct errors; and
encouraging greater service for Christ… All scripture [is]
given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God
may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
“that we through
patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
The profits gained from
the Word can be summed up in two basic ideas… patience and comfort. When the Word is applied to our hearts, it stirs
within us both patience and comfort as we continue our life’s course on earth. It is this same Word that gives us hope, as
we eagerly await the receipt of the many promises of God for this world and the
eternity to come.
The importance of His
Word cannot be over emphasized. Job, a
Godly man who went through severe trials of His faith, looked upon the Word as
of ultimate importance for his life… I have esteemed the
words of his mouth more than my necessary [food]. (Job 23:12)
The easiest way for us
to develop an appreciation for God’s Word is to, with serious reflection, ask
ourselves this question… “What would my life be like if I had never come in contact
with His Word?”
May we forever thank Him
for His Word that He has given to us.
May the
Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.
