“Wherefore thou art no more
a servant, but a son”
SIH’s Think On
These Things: Gal 4:4-7
Gal
4:4-7 But when the fulness
of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the
law, To
redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of
sons. And
because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your
hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a
son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
As this Thanksgiving
month progresses, let’s turn our attention to another wonderful work that the
Lord accomplishes when He redeemed us on the cross.
“But when the fulness
of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the
law”
The birth of Christ in Bethlehem
took place on God’s timetable. It was
not an accident, nor an after-thought, nor was it a quickly contrived remedy
for an unexpected fall of man. No, it
was the plan of God, made in eternity past, to bring about the deliverance of
His people from the sin they have chosen to commit.
Fathered by the Spirit, Christ
was brought into this world by Mary through the physical birth process. Being not only God, but human as well, Christ
was a citizen of the nation of Israel (making him subject to the ceremonial and
judicial law of God) and a citizen of all mankind (making Him subject to the
moral law of God)
“To redeem them that
were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”
What was one of the
great purposes of Christ’s coming? It
was to redeem (pay the ransom for) us from under the mandate and punishment of
the law of God. Before the work of
Christ is applied to the heart, the only possible way to escape the wrath of
God would be to perfectly keep God’s moral law.
For fallen mankind, this is impossible.
Therefore, God sent His Son to pay the price for our moral disobedience,
giving us the way of escape from the wrath of God.
This same act of
redemption also brings us into the family of God. In other words, we are permanently
adopted into God’s family.
“And
because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your
hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a
son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”
The blessings that come
to us based upon our family membership are three-fold. First, we receive His indwelling Spirit to
accompany, comfort, aid and keep us secure in Him. Second, we are no longer enslaved to keeping
His law to gain salvation, but now, we joyfully keep His commands from a heart
of love and desire to please our Heavenly Father. Third, we become heirs of God, securing for
us many wonderful temporal and eternal blessings that are shared with all other
fellow believers and Christ Himself.
Folks, let us live today
with thankful hearts knowing that, if we have trusted in Christ, through His
shed blood, we have become members of the family of God and joint-heirs with
Christ.
If there are some
reading this who have never trusted in Christ, please be thankful He has made a
way for you to become adopted members of His family as well. By acknowledging your disobedience to God and
turning to Him in faith you can become part of His family and become heirs of
His grace and blessings.
Eph
1:3-6 (KJV) Blessed
[be] the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly [places] in Christ: According
as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should
be holy and without blame before him in love: Having
predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,
according to the good pleasure of his will, To
the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the
beloved.
May the
Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.
