Responsible Living: Do Not Commit Adultery
(Part #2): Prov 6:32-35
32) [But] whoso committeth adultery
with a woman lacketh understanding: he [that]
doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33) A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be
wiped away.
34) For jealousy [is] the
rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35) He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though
thou givest many gifts.
INTRODUCTION:
Solomon continues to share
proverbs that explain the devastating results of committing adultery….
EXPOSITION:
32) [But] whoso committeth adultery
with a woman lacketh understanding: he [that]
doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
The
person who commits adultery proves they do not know the true nature of the sin. If they had understanding they would know the
horrible effects that adultery will bring upon them.
Adultery,
not only brings physical harm, but more importantly, works gradual spiritual ruin.
“Marriage [is] honourable in all, and the bed
undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” (Hebrews 13:4)
33) A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be
wiped away.
One
of the dreadful results to adultery is the permanent destruction of a person’s
testimony in the eyes of others. This harm
to the testimony is described as:
1.
a wound – a leprous sore that continually worsens
2.
dishonor – disgrace, to be taken lightly, counted as unimportant
3.
reproach – to speak evil about, to strip all beauty from
It
is these results that will never be totally taken away this side of
heaven. It will be a permanent mark on
the character of the person committing the sin.
“A Psalm of David, to bring
to remembrance. O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy
hot displeasure. For thine arrows stick
fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. [There is] no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither [is
there any] rest in my bones because of my sin. For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are
too heavy for me. My wounds stink [and] are
corrupt because of my foolishness. I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. For my loins are filled
with a loathsome [disease]: and [there is] no soundness in my flesh. I am feeble and sore
broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.” (Psalms 38:1-8)
34) For jealousy [is] the
rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35) He will not
regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
For
those who have been sinned against, they will hold a hot anger against the
sinner. This hot anger will continue to
boil and burn within until an opportunity comes to get revenge on the
adulterer. When the opportunity arises,
nothing will turn back his retaliation (not a bribe, not a request for mercy
etc etc)
“Therefore have I also made
you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept
my ways, but have been partial in the law.” (Malachi 2:9)
SUMMARY:
In
the last two devotions, Solomon has been teaching concerning the sin of
adultery. What have we learned over the past
two days?
1. With the act of adultery comes the certainty
of harmful consequences.
2. Because of the severity of the sin of
adultery, and the multiplicity of the sins that are involved, NO ONE can expect
to escape harmful results from this willful, selfish act of immorality.
3. The heinousness of the sin of adultery…. It
is the uncaring, willful harming of another to fulfill fleshly lusts. It is choosing the carnal pleasure of the
sinful world, over loving God and putting Him first. It is an inexcusable sin.
4. The person who commits adultery proves they
do not know the true heinous nature of the sin.
5. Adultery, not only brings physical harm, but
more importantly, works gradual spiritual ruin.
6. One of the dreadful results to adultery is
the permanent destruction of a person’s testimony in the eyes of others.
7. Those who have been sinned against will hold
a hot anger against the sinner. This anger
will not be turned back through the use of bribes or pleas for mercy.
By
God’s grace, let us all study these proverbs diligently, giving them the value
that they deserve.

Lord bless us as we receive this sound wisdom and then “Think On These Things”.
