“SIH’s Think On These Things: 1Cor 6:19b”

1Cor 6:19b (KJV)

19) What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

In our devotion for this morning we will finish up 1 Cor 6:19.  In our text we are told that something  is given to us by God “which ye have of God”.  What is the something this phrase is referring to?  Based on the previous part of verse 19, it could be one of two things.  It can be referring to the indwelling Holy Spirit or to our physical bodies.

The Bible makes it clear that the indwelling Spirit is a gift given to us from the Lord to minister to us in the absence of Christ… John 16:7-15 (KJV)  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.

But the Bible is also equally plain that our physical life and existence (including our physical bodies) are found in God … Acts 17:28 (KJV) For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

So we can easily see that both the Holy Spirit and our physical bodies come from our Lord.

Note, that our text finishes by saying “and ye are not your own”.  This helps us to understand that our physical body, the container of the Holy Spirit, is not our possession.  It is the possession of Christ and, therefore, it should be used for His glory and honor.   He made us and He redeemed us … we are His!... Ps 66:8-9 (KJV)  O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard:  Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.

Let us all, though the leadership of the Holy Spirit use our physical bodies to serve our Lord, knowing that our bodies are given to us by His grace and for His service.

May the Lord bless us as we “Think On These Things”.
